Drew's memorial service

A week ago today, on Memorial Day, we were in Kansas. The community has a Memorial Day service to honor veterans. After this short service, we had a small memorial service for Drew, Matt's brother who died last Thanksgiving weekend.

(The photo to the left is some of our kids clearing dirt off the grave of Matt's mom's stillborn older brother. They just started cleaning it off without anyone telling them to. The marker just in front of them is Mom's and Drew's, and the one in front of that is of her parents.)

Matt talked about how Drew struggled with alcoholism his whole adult life, and how we believe that Drew accepted Jesus as his Savior. Matt talked about how even though Drew's life here on Earth was pretty messed up, Drew got what is really most important right.

Matt & I have been married for 18 years, and last Monday was the third time I've seen him cry. Matt is a very empathetic person who cares deeply for people, but doesn't often cry... especially in front of other people. Matt had me, Mark & Anita all crying, too. It was good to express those feelings of sadness over Drew's death.

I read a few Scripture verses and said a little bit about Drew, too. Here are the verses I read:

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23

"But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

Matt's brother Mark, his wife Anita, and their Mom's cousin Larry also said a few things about Drew. Then we sang "Amazing Grace", buried Drew's ashes next to their mom and grandparents, and took a few photos. It was good to have the memorial service, and we had quite a few extended family members there with us.

This life here on Earth is only a drop in the bucket of our existence. Jesus' death on the cross made it so we can spend eternity in heaven with God.

Have you ever trusted in what Jesus did for you?
You never know when it will be the end of your earthly life. If you want to talk about it, email me... it's the most important decision you can make! :)
