We decided this week to stop renting out our beach house as a vacation
rental and to rent it long-term. This is a really big change for us, since this is our ninth summer renting our place as a vacation rental.
We've really enjoyed being vacation rental owners & sharing our home with our guests. And with the exception of a few glitches here and there and one really tough summer a few years back, it's gone quite well for us.
But it's been hard on our neighbors to have an ever-changing group of neighbors, week after week, all season long. We want to preserve relationships with our neighbors up there, and we have concerns about the wear on the septic system from a constant barrage of groups of vacationers. So we've decided to find long-term renters to stay in our home.
One of the sad parts is that we won't be able to stay in our home when we're in Marquette. And we'll need a good handyperson to help with miscellaneous repairs throughout the year, rather than saving them all up for when we're in Marquette. But this will still allow the house to pay for its upkeep so that one day we can spend more time there. (It would be great to be "snowbirds", enjoying the pleasant winters here in Arizona & then escaping the heat of summer by being in Marquette.)

Money-wise, I think we'll come out pretty even, maybe a little better. We'll be renting for a monthly rate without having to pay for any of the utilities, dumpster, cleaning, detergents, supplies and "extras" like wifi and cable for the guests. So I think it will end up pretty close in the end.
So anyway, that's the news around here. It's pretty big for me, since I have a lot to keep track of with all of the vacation rental management tasks (guests' needs, upkeep, paying bills, etc.), and this will simplify things. So this will probably be a very good thing for me. :)
Now we just have the tiny little matter of finding good tenants for the year... ;)
