Our nephew Will's class is doing a Flat Stanley project, and his flat person, named Flat Striped Emily, came 1,980 miles via envelope for a visit. (How handy it must be, to be a flat person and be able to travel by mail!) The following is a report of her adventures in sunny Arizona, so that Will and his classmates can see what she discovered.
Last Thursday, Flat Striped Emily joined us for school at our house. We read about the Civil War with Will's cousin Naomi, who is a fifth grader. She is the only person in her class because she is homeschooled. Her brothers are also homeschooled and in the sixth and eighth grades, and her older brother and sister have graduated and are college students now.
On Saturday, we went to the Scottsdale Arabian Horse show. This is a huge horse show that lasts two weeks, and people travel from around the world to be a part of it. The horses were so beautiful, and we watched a few classes at the horse show. We got to see our friend Sarah, who rode horses in several events earlier in the week, and we checked out some artists who had their work displayed there. (Since Will's aunt is an artist, we look at art wherever we go!) The postcard in the photo is from an artist friend of Sarah's from Alberta, Canada, where they are both from.
On Sunday, Flat Striped Emily came to our church with us. Our church is called The Oasis, which is a fun name if you know what the word oasis means. The dictionary says that an oasis is an area in a desert where there is water and plants, or a time or experience that is pleasant and restful. I think maybe the people who gave our church its name were hoping it would be a pleasant, restful place in the middle of the desert we live in here in Arizona. :)
She liked the huge saguaro cactus outside our church. Did you know a saguaro is about 75 years old before it grows its first arm? They can live to be 150 to 200 years old!! Saguaro are only found in the Sonoran Desert, located in southern Arizona and part of Sonora, Mexico.
We invited Flat Striped Emily into our hot tub, but she was afraid her stripes would run. A friend gave the hot tub to us when she moved away a few years ago, and we love having it. In the summertime, when our temperatures are over 100 degrees, we just close the lid and wait until cooler temperatures come. ;)
Flat Striped Emily was happy to pick an orange in our back yard. This year's fruit tastes so sweet! We planted our tree about five or six years ago, when it was tiny. It keeps growing bigger every year and making yummy oranges for us to enjoy.

It looks like Flat Striped Emily had a lot of fun! Thanks for showing her around :) Will was excited to see the pictures.
I didn't know that Will was doing this. Sounds she had a good time visiting you all. Wish we could get out you way that easily.
