The Cross-Country Adventure: Day One, Saturday, June 9, 2007

Right from the start, when Matt accepted his new job in Arizona, we had planned on leaving town right after Youth for Christ's Run for Youth. Our friend Irmgard, who had been helping us extensively that last week, took the kids home with her Friday night so we could get the rest of our things ready. Her husband, Lynn, stayed late that night to help with loading last-minute things in the moving truck. I'm not sure what we would have done without their help those last few days in town!

Irmgard brought the kids to the Run for Youth, and offered to take them afterwards so we could get the last, last-minute things ready. (In our typical family fashion, we weren't ready when we had hoped to be!) So after we walked (and some ran) the Run for Youth, David went to his friend Micah's house for the afternoon/evening, and the other kids went to Irmgard's house. (The photo above is Irmgard with the kids, waiting for the start of the Run.)

Matt & I got back to the house and felt completely overwhelmed! There was STILL so much to be done! Lynn pulled up on his motorcycle and helped us, once again. Suddenly, we were able to get everything together, realizing that some things would just have to be done later, with a few strategic calls to get people to help.

I think it was about 11:00 p.m. when we had everything together and all the kids picked up. We called our friends 1 1/2 hours away, Steve & Heidi, who we were supposed to stay with that night, and told them we'd stay somewhere on the way and see them the next day.

We drove away, just glad to actually be getting out of town the day that we'd planned to. But we couldn't find a place to stay in the next couple of towns, with enough room for the moving truck & car carrier to park. So we headed back to our town and checked out a couple of the cheaper motels. They wanted too much money, so we headed back to our home on the beach to sleep that night.
